Some time ago i granted google photos the acces to my phone's default gallery and really regret that decision at this point, since whenever i delete a pic or video from gallery to save space on my device (note that i still have plenty of space available in google photos but my phone has less space!), it's backup copy is also deleted from google photos which makes the whole of having a backup.

After backup/restore pics and videos in google messages are missing i performed a backup dec 21, 2022 and did a factory reset When i restored from that backup, none of my google messages app pictures were there Google photos, calendar and everything else was there after the restore but not in message pics or videos. Camera images are saved as.jpg files
I would recommend using a file manager app or an image editor to convert the image. Unfortunately, there isn't any way to search the photos of the person's single pictures
