0 the latch bolt in the mortise lock on my front door hangs, presumably because of built up grime Some folks like graphite, but i find it a bit messy to use. At any rate it gets stuck before exiting the faceplate fully (see picture below), resulting in it not entering the strike plate

I want to try to clean the lock and then lubricate it, but i am uncertain about the best way to go about it. Silicone works great, won't harm surrounding finishes etc Consider the local weather conditions before selecting a suitable lubricant.

I could replace it, but i'd rather try to repair it first

The door knob in question is a basic interior door knob It looks like this one Questions is it possible to lubricate the internals of the door knob hardware to return it to like new condition What kind of lubricant is right for the job

Where should i apply the. The latch bolt of the mortise lockset in a metal security door is stiff I have a very sticky door lock, is it safe to oil it with standard household oil Will oil degrade the security of the lock in any way

If it's safe, how should i apply the oil?

Grease or some sort of dry lube like graphite or a silicone spray Seems that inside the door, grease would be reasonably well protected from collecting dirt/dust, but could still get gummed up over time. The push buttons move fine, but sometimes the blade switch inside doesn't flip unless the button is pressed very hard Oil of any kind is the wrong lube to use on hinges

Oil, wd40, or any petro based product wets the hinge surfaces and will collect dust and dirt I always recommend dry silicone spray
