The proliferation of diversity and inclusion initiatives across sectors virtually guarantees that there will be debate about the terms of engagement. In recent years, a new function area has emerged in the museum field focused on diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion (deai) This report, which highlights the results from aam’s excellence in deai task force, is intended to be a starting point for spurring conversation and action that advances excellence in deai in the museum field.
The report reflects the thoughtful work of the excellence in deai task force, comprised of museum leaders with both expertise and experience with accreditation and diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion (deai), with input from the museum field.
In spring 2017, following its strategic plan, the american alliance of museums (aam) convened the working group on diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion (deai). Development teams are being asked to prioritize deai funding, and deai efforts are being embedded into other projects and funding requests, including education, outreach, and collections care. Having a dedicated deai leader, as well as an advocate for the necessary resources and support for this work, legitimizes the undertaking itself Deai work is a specialized field that spans a wide array of practices, teachings, research areas, and lived realities.
